"The young men of the DeMolay organization are taught responsibility, integrity and honesty, and those have been the central values in my life. All of us who were involved in DeMolay in my time benefited tremendously from it.

There are hundreds of thousands of examples of men whose adult careers were greatly enhanced because of their participation in DeMolay. The sad part of it is that it is such a brief period in our lives that we are able to be a part of it, but it occurs at a time of great change in a young man's life. DeMolay's lessons last a lifetime."

MELVIN E. "Mel" CARNAHAN

February 4, 1934 - October 16, 2000

Inducted June 26, 1999

Governor of Missouri

Gov. Carnahan was born in the small Ozarks town of Birch Tree in 1934.
Although his parents were both schoolteachers, his father branched out into politics and served seven terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, which brought Carnahan to Washington D.C., where he attended local public schools.
He met his wife, Jean, in high school.
The two of them graduated from George Washington University together.
Mel then received his law degree from University of Missouri.

He started his career as a public servant at age 26 when he was elected as a Municipal Judge.
Two years later, he was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives where in 1965-67 he was majority floor leader.
After a break from public life to focus on family matters and his law career, he returned to politics by being elected State Treasurer in 1980.
In 1988, he was elected Lieutenant Governor and in 1992, Mel Carnahan was elected Missouri's 51st Governor by defeating incumbent Governor John Ashcroft.
He was re-elected by a considerable majority in 1996.

Governor Carnahan is a Senior DeMolay from Anacostia Chapter, Washington D.C.
He joined on June 6, 1950 at the age of 16.
He received the degree of Chevalier and the Active Legion of Honor

I have many fond memories of my time as a DeMolay Member. Along with my home and my church, DeMolay was one of the major influences on my life during those early formative years. One of the most important lessons I learned from DeMolay was the need for respect-respect for your parents, respect for women, respect for your family and friends, and respect for your community. I also appreciated the many wonderful friendships I was able to make within my chapter. DeMolay provides young men with the tools they need to assume leadership roles and accept the many civic and personal responsibilities that lie ahead of them. Most important of all, DeMolay builds strong character and instills the values that will continue to make this country a great one."

On October 16, 2000 Missouri's Governor Mel Carnahan, a Senior DeMolay and Hall of Fame member, died when his twin engine Cessna 335 crashed en route to his US Senate campaign stop in New Madrid, Missouri. His eldest son, Roger, and a campaign aide were also on board.
At the time of his death, Carnahan was embroiled in highly contested race for the United States Senate with Ashcroft, a former governor and the incumbent Senator. As the election came down to the wire, the polls were split between the two candidates.
The crash came too late to remove Carnahan's name from the ballot, so Lt. Governor Roger Wilson, who succeeded Carnahan, said he would appoint Jean Carnahan, to the Senate seat should her husband defeat Ashcroft.
On November 7, 2000, the late Gov. Carnahan won election to the United States Senate. True to his word, Wilson appointed Mrs. Carnahan to the Senate. On three previous occasions, voters have chosen deceased candidates for the United States House, though no one had ever won election to the Senate in this manner, until now.

Newly appointed Senator Jean Carnahan said, "Abraham Lincoln never saw his nation made whole again. Susan B. Anthony never cast a vote. Martin Luther King Jr. never finished his mountaintop journey. My husband's journey has stopped short, too, and for reasons we do not know or understand, the mantle has now fallen upon us. We remain heirs of a legacy."

"Needless to say, DeMolay had a profound effect on me. It arrived at a critical point in my life. For at fourteen, the issues of fraternity, faith and trust were insignificant. The example of Jacques DeMolay's courage helped me see that there was another dimension to one's life and that the attempt to reach a worthy goal could give so much more meaning to one's life. Of course, the opportunity to go through the chairs was an honor and certainly nurtured whatever leadership qualities I might possess today."
